National Library Week, April 21-25 Author John Claude Bemis Visits All Four Counties of the Northwestern Regional Library!

John Claude Bemis is the award-winning author of six middle-grade novels, a picture book, and the Rodeo Hawkins graphic novel series. A former school teacher, John earned his Master’s of Education from UNC Chapel Hill and taught  for thirteen years. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award for his work as an author-presenter in schools and served as NC’s Piedmont Laureate for Children’s Literature. Beyond writing, John is also a sculptural mask-maker, a songwriter, and musician. He lives with his wife and daughter in Hillsborough, North Carolina. johnclaudebemis.com.

Stories and Songs with Josh Castevens and Tommy Jackson

Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m.

The Stories and Songs Series is excited to welcome Josh Castevens and Tommy Jackson as they perform at the Boonville Library. With their new CD “Duo Sessions”, local Elkin/Boonville artists, Tommy and Josh have a style all their own and have been compared to Tom Petty, Jon Prine and Willie Nelson. Since Tommy’s song, “I Love You, But” reached number one on the worldwide genre charts on iTunes, he has been mentioned in Rolling Stone, UK and Nashville Weekly. Tommy and Josh have enjoyed breathing new life into original songs in a stripped down duo setting, creating a raw, organic and authentic sound all their own. Don’t miss it! Contemplative Reading & Writing Workshops with Ulrike Wiethaus, PhD

March 10th and every second Tuesday 1 – 2:30 p.m.

The workshop will introduce the ancient art of contemplative writing and reading called Lectio Divina. It was widely practiced in medieval monasteries to foster personal growth and deeper insight. Combining Lectio Divina with mindfulness meditation we will explore short texts and generate reflective writings that we will share with the group. Adult Audience: Texts will be provided at time of workshops, along with any other materials but participants are encouraged to bring their own writing materials, such as journals or preferred pens. 

Ulrike Wiethaus, PhD is Professor Emerita in the Department for the Study of Religions at Wake Forest University. She is the author, co-author, and co-editor of numberous books and articles in the history of Christian Spirituality and American Indian studies. As the inaugural director, she has guided the creation of the Religion and Public Engagement Concentration in Religious Studies at Wake Forest University.

This workshop will cover the care and maintenance of Pitcher Plants and how they can be beneficial to us. The first few participants to register will receive a plant to take home! The number will be determined later since the plants are just coming out of dormancy. Participants are encouraged to attend the workshop for the valuable information about these exciting plants!

The Yadkin County Cooperative Extension and Yadkin 4-H Club have collected and distributed seed donations for this year, restocking Boonville, East Bend, Jonesville, and Yadkinville libraries’ Seed Libraries!

We would like to thank all of the patrons and businesses who have donated: Tractor Supply in Yadkinville, Dollar Tree in Yadkinville, Lowe’s in Mocksville, and Walmart in Elkin.

Here is a list of what varieties are available at the Yadkinville seed library (please note, quantities will not be updated regularly on inventory list): Seed Inventory. There should be similar seed varieties at the Boonville, East Bend, and Jonesville Public Libraries.

First come, first serve, and you can take as many seed packets as needed, within reason (e.g. do not take all of any one seed). Anything you do not use, feel free to return, as we have empty seed envelopes.

Silent Book Club Often with traditional book clubs there’s the scramble to finish the assigned book, and the pressure to have something smart to say. Wouldn’t it be great to have a book club where you could just enjoy books, friends, and maybe some coffee — without any homework? At Silent Book Club, there’s no assigned reading.     Better Read than Dead (mystery) Our February book is You Shouldn’t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose. This book is also available instantly through the Hoopla app.
