History

In the spring of 1961, a group from the Jonesville-Arlington Woman's Club began the process of establishing a library in Jonesville. Miss Phyllis Snyder from the North Carolina State Library recommended that the two towns combine in order to meet population figures for a federal grant. A grant of $3,875 was awarded.

This grant was used to purchase books and to pay a librarian's salary for one year. The Jonesville-Arlington Public library opened May 21, 1962 in the Jonesville Town Hall building. In July 1962, Yadkin County became part of the Northwestern Regional Library system.

On October 31, 1983, the library moved its present location in the building adjacent to town hall.

In June 1997, the new automated circulation system was up and running followed by the first public internet access in the regional system in September 1997.

In March 1999, the library finally received the rest of the space in the library building to use for a history room and additional storage areas.

In April 2001, the Jonesville-Arlington Public Library, as a member of the Northwestern Regional Library installed the SIRSI Unicorn online automated system to continue improving services to the public.

Quilt Raffle

Sandy Martin of Pilot Mountain was the lucky winner of the Northwestern Regional Library's quilt raffle.  Again thank you to Carol McDowell for the donation of the queen-size quilt.  And thank you to Anne Gulley, Carol McDowell, Joan Sanders and the rest of the Friends of the Elkin Public Library for making the quilt raffle possible.

Digital NC

For the first time Northwestern Regional Library has digital local history items on www.digitalnc.org.  The Digital Heritage Center supports community engagement and lifelong learning by promoting and increasing access of the historical collections and North Carolina’s cultural heritage through digitization.  The Center is supported by the State Library of North Carolina, with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library and Services and Technology Act, and by the UNC-Chapel Hill University Library.
